Commit now all your griefs,
and ways into his hands,
to his sure truth and tender care,
who earth and heav’n commands.
Who points the clouds their course,
whom winds and seas obey,
He shall direct your wandering feet,
He shall prepare your way
Give to the winds your fears,
hope, and be undismayed.
God hears your sighs and counts your tears,
God shall lift up your head.
Through waves and clouds and storms,
he gently clears your way,
wait for his time, so shall the night
soon end in joyous day.
Still heavy is your heart,
Still sink your spirits down?
Cast off the weight, let fear depart,
and every care be gone.
He everywhere has sway,
and all things serve his might,
his every act pure blessing is,
his path unsullied light.
The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.
Does our gracious God delight in our ways? The words of the psalmist encourage us to strive after faithfulness and enjoy safe pasture in Yahweh. Our chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him for ever. The regenerate heart, you and me in Christ are engaged in dynamic gospel-centered pursuits, growing in grace, filled with Spirit power and excited about what God is doing in and through us. We are encouraged as we delight ourselves in our God; he gives us the desires of our hearts. Christ who is our life changes our perceptions; our values reflect Jesus! In contrast to a wayward selfish culture and despite the injustice, overwhelming suffering, loss, emotional turmoil, financial struggle, recurring sin, etc. inherent in this life, we trust in Yahweh and do good; we turn from evil and do good. ‘He shall direct your wandering feet, he shall prepare your way.’ I need to commit my way to the Lord daily and ask him to help me trust him more with everything he brings into my life. So, as we commit, trust, be still before the Lord, wait patiently, refrain from anger, turn from wrath, and do good as the Spirit leads, our sovereign God does delight in our ways and makes our steps firm.
My prayer for you and me is that our most powerful indwelling God will make our righteousness in Christ shine like the dawn and the justice of our gospel-centered causes like the noonday sun. Be ye encouraged, “For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones.” Indeed! ‘Through waves and clouds and storms,
he gently clears your way.’
As we journey this life with Christ, I am so thankful our God helps and delivers us from wickedness, especially as we take refuge in him. Moreover, we have empathy for the broken, and weep for the wayward and unrepentant; ‘God hears your sighs and counts your tears, God shall lift up your head.’ Our gracious God enables us to have mercy for the wicked as we live and proclaim this great salvation. You know the joy brought about by repentance and the evidence (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness…) of a changed life is the glory of God’s mercy.
Far, far above your thought,
his counsel shall appear,
when fully he the work has wrought,
that caused your needless fear.
Leave to his sovereign will
to choose and to command,
with wonder filled, you then shall know
how wise, how strong his hand.
