Friday Morning Prayer:)… November 6, 2020

November 6, 2020 - 8 minutes read

Take the Name of Jesus with you,
Child of sorrow and of woe,
It will joy and comfort give you;
Take it then, where’er you go.

Precious Name, oh, how sweet!
Hope of earth and joy of Heav’n;
Precious Name, oh, how sweet!
Hope of earth and joy of Heav’n.

Take the Name of Jesus ever,
As a shield from every snare;
If temptations round you gather,
Breathe that holy Name in prayer.[1]

See to it, brothers [sisters] that none of you has a sinful unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.  But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.[2]

We readily sing the proclamation, “O victory in Jesus, My Savior, forever.  He sought me and bought me with His redeeming blood; He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is due Him, He plunged me to victory, Beneath the cleansing flood…”[3]  We sing with confidence because, “Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that is greater than all our sin! … Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace, [f]reely bestowed on all who believe!”[4]  Amazing grace!    Our Lord Jesus, “After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”[5]  Moreover, “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.”[6]  Our God, Jesus, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.”[7]  Great salvation indeed!  I absolutely love the old hymns because they reflect in word and song the glory of God, his majesty, glory, magnificence, power, redemption, and remind, encourage, comfort, warn, with integrated biblical truth, the humble heart to stay the gospel course with enthusiastic, joy-filled intention ‘as long as it is called Today.’

Has this great salvation been confirmed to you?  I asked the men at Thursday night’s meeting about their testimony.  I was most curious how this great salvation impacted their life and was it continually causing change.  One fella shared his recognition of the seriousness of God’s call for his life.  An intense, pain-filled, take your breath away dream revealed to him the consequences of ignoring this great salvation, which did stir his heart unto repentance and now he strives to live a supernaturally changed life by God’s grace and power in continual pursuit toward holiness and maturity in Christ.   Another guy heard the gospel while being offered a meal through a church homeless outreach ministry.  He acknowledged the cross and his need for redemption.  He professed Christ as his Savior.  However, I am not convinced, yet, that he has experienced this salvation as great, true, life-changing, fulfilling, empowering, all-consuming, and most satisfying!

My prayer for every person God brings into my sphere of influence, and you too in Christ, is that God will have mercy and the Holy Spirit will indwell and a true Christ-life will manifest.  “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”[8]  Moreover, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.”[9]  Since God has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe,[10] we are called to see, listen, and pay attention to Jesus!  Why?  “We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.”[11]

How do I drift away?  I drift and you do too if we neglect our great salvation!  I fail to pay careful attention to the gospel and the supernatural life God has called me to live and overflow!  The world, or the flesh, or the devil entices the ill-equipped, carnal, compromising, haughty, too busy for God, no heart desire to pray, fellowship, or Bible study, and focus is lost.  A blurred vision, ignoring, succumbing to this or that, weak inattentive, no room for God, hinders, stifles, quenches the joy of God, the peace of God, the power of God until the mighty hand of God disciplines and prompts me and every truly regenerate heart to redirect, repent, and humbly cry out for help.  Oh, man! “See to it… that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.”  No!   Be ye encouraged, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.  And, let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”[12]  “So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.”[13]

Oh, the precious Name of Jesus!
How it thrills our souls with joy,
When His loving arms receive us,
And His songs our tongues employ!

At the Name of Jesus bowing,
Falling prostrate at His feet,
King of kings in heav’n we’ll crown Him,
When our journey is complete.
