Friday Morning Prayer:)… November 19, 2020

November 20, 2020 - 9 minutes read

I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”

Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

For nothing good have I
Whereby Thy grace to claim;
I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb.

And now complete in Him,
My robe, His righteousness,
Close sheltered ’neath His side,
I am divinely blest.

Lord, now indeed I find
Thy pow’r, and Thine alone,
Can change the *leper’s spots [*leopard’s]
And melt the heart of stone.[1]

“But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”[2]

Am I enjoying God to the fullest extent he calls me to?  Are you?  I am certain I have erroneous tendencies that need correcting.  My constant goal is to identify and change harmful ungodly ways that inevitably hinder overflowing joy, hinder intimate meaningful, lifechanging, heartfelt interactions with God, and stifle my effectiveness as a Christian.  I absolutely have to feed on gospel truth—the writer of Hebrews refers to the elementary truths as milk associated with infancy, “for everyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is unskilled in the word of righteousness.”[3]  However, our call to maturity reflects the truly regenerate heart thriving on solid food skilled and excelling in holy, humble, right conduct to God’s glory.  I sincerely pray as you read, study, and dig for precious gold in the word of God that you overflow with God given mercy, love, and compassion as God walks talks, and tells you, you are his own.  It is necessary to thrive on milk for an appropriate season and gain, grow, understand the elementary truths of the gospel as a beginning.  However, your heavenly call, and mine too, in order to truly enjoy God to the fullest is to leave or build on and excel beyond the elementary teachings of the word and pursue spiritual maturity by constantly consuming, digesting, daily training in the abundant, exciting, supernatural depths of God through his word, diligent prayer, and accountable fellowship with mature, devoted, humble, pursuing God friendships, small groups, and a gospel teaching church fellowship.

If I am complacent, compromise godly standards, and become dull, sluggish, or lazy in my gospel pursuit I no longer enjoy the supernatural overflow of God’s blessings.  I think it is safe to say that the writer of Hebrews is exhorting his friends, and us too, to not quench God’s indwelling power and encouraging them to live demonstrating grace, lovingkindness, and to constantly pursue the depths of the gospel so that they, and we too, would genuinely, essentially, and necessarily be well trained to distinguish good from evil.

In our Wednesday small group we wrestled, experienced conviction, were encouraged by the inspired words, thankful for biblical principles, and precepts given to us by our sovereign God who cares about our steadfast maturity and helps us overcome our weaknesses and recurring sinful nature tendencies.  Like the recipients in the book of Hebrews, I need to redirect in the direction toward self-discipline, maturity, with an accompanying supernatural motivation, joy, spiritual hunger, desire, that is consistent with my God-ordained purpose to glorify and enjoy him forever!  This supernatural pursuit is opposed to becoming or acquiring a state of “slow to learn” sluggish, even slothful in my journey with Christ.   The warning to grow, mature, and live in right relationship with God and others is clear.  My regenerate heart, and maybe yours too, is stirred by inspired words, “…it is hard to explain because you [have become] slow to learn.  In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again.  You need milk, not solid food!”[4]  Indeed, a healthy dose of tough love; a call to repentance, and necessary change that ensures the experience of God as real and satisfying through every hardship, challenge, and overwhelming life circumstance.

“Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are confident of better things in your case—things that accompany salvation.”[5]  Beloved, as you read the book of Hebrews recognize the heartfelt plea of the writer for us to truly know God personally and demonstrate this great salvation in and through your new life in Christ.  No surface meaningless Christian life!  I can repent today, and every day as God makes evident my recurring faults, and enjoy our gracious God fully!  Today is the day of salvation and sanctification.  However, tomorrow is not promised and the continually resistant hard heart that produces thorns and thistles may not be able to repent tomorrow, and definitely is not enjoying God today!  “We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure.”  Be greatly encouraged!  “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul.”[6]    “… hear the Savior say,  ‘Thy strength indeed is small; Child of weakness, watch and pray, Find in Me thine all in all.’ “

When from my dying bed
My ransomed soul shall rise,
“Jesus died my soul to save,”
Shall rend the vaulted skies.

And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete,
I’ll lay my trophies down,
All down at Jesus’ feet.
