Friday Morning Prayer:)… May 3, 2018

May 3, 2018 - 6 minutes read
O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There’s light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free!

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

Through death into life everlasting
He passed, and we follow Him there;
O’er us sin no more hath dominion—
For more than conqu’rors we are![1]

“Therefore we do not lose heart.  Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.  For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.  For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”[2]

It hurts to lose a loved one.   This past week my grandma appeared before the judgment seat of Christ to receive what is due for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.[3]  I was honored to help with the funeral.  It was good to see family, to love and comfort one another.   To gather reflect and eulogize our beloved grandma was healthy and a necessary part of the mourning process.   You too have had to suffer the loss of a loved one.  This life is predictable in that way and unpredictable in many ways.   Nonetheless, through faith, hope, and love God’s grace sustains us as we hold fast to our most gracious God in Christ Jesus.

In Christ we love those hurting, we mourn with those who mourn, and extend the grace of God through Jesus.  Only in Christ can we rejoice in our sufferings because we know God helps us persevere and is actively developing our character and strengthening our hope.  This living hope does not disappoint us because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.[4]

Be encouraged this day that our God is sovereign and hears your cry for comfort.  He knows our need for his power to realize this life in Christ.  “…we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”[5]  “But now, Lord, what do I look for?  My hope is in you.”[6]  We do not grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.  No! “We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.”[7]

The duration of my life, your life, the life of every living creature God knows.  “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;”[8]  In general, “The length of our days is seventy years, or eighty if we have the strength.”[9] It is tough!  I am feeling the “wasting away” outwardly, but so thankful for the inward renewing day by day in Christ.   Beloved, be inwardly renewed today!  We cry out together to the God of all comfort.  “Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”[10]

His Word shall not fail you—He promised;
Believe Him, and all will be well:
Then go to a world that is dying,
His perfect salvation to tell!
