You Are Holy, Holy
Lord God Almighty.
Worthy is the lamb.
Worthy is the lamb.[1]
In a loud voice they sang: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”[2]
___________
Why do we sing unto the Lord? The Spirit of God through Asaph, we read the Psalm, “Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob!”[3] Every truly regenerate heart is compelled, prompted, stirred by the indwelling Holy Spirit to sing, ‘worthy is the Lamb…’ God is our strength, our comfort, our overflowing joy! When you sing Hallelujah, your voice proclaims “Praise ye Yah” or “Praise Yahweh” and “praise the Lord.”[4] Every day is alike for many Christians, yet we get to experience devoted times of gathering to enjoy God through our fellowship with the saints and echo worthy, worthy, worthy is the Lamb—with the heavenly hosts on Sundays, mid-week, and random days, even every day, we sing and enjoy melodious instruments! Beloved, find yourself, often, worshipping in Spirit and truth!
Like the Israelites, we too have compelling reasons to sing and rejoice. Psalm 81 opens with the call to worship in light of the autumn festival. “Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob! Begin the music, strike the tambourine, play the melodious harp and lyre.”[5] There was a joyful, celebratory, festive recognition, even an obligation to worship and celebrate our God who truly was then, is now, always will be the divine merciful source of saving, strengthening, preserving grace.
The obstacle to truly worshipping in Spirit and truth is my own stubborn heart. God’s grace extends to all people—his saving grace according to his sovereign will. The inspired words of the Psalmist transcend time. “Hear, O my people, and I will warn you—if you would but listen to me, O Israel!”[6] In Christ, you too are a child of God. You want spiritual ears to hear, and I do too. Every truly regenerate heart has heard, believes, trusts, has faith in Jesus, our Jewish Messiah. Whether Jew or Gentile, believers, resting, trusting, abiding in Christ, our Savior, and Lord, are now part of redeemed Israel. “This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.”[7]
I make this point to emphasize that God is the same yesterday, today, and always. Fallen human nature applies to all generations and ethnic groups. Through the cross, there is reconciliation with God. By grace through faith has always been God’s redemptive plan. Therefore, as we read, ‘O my people, and I will warn you—if you would just listen to me O Israel!’ we ask for saving mercy, ears to hear, and transformation by the renewing of our minds to understand the gospel, our holy calling, God’s saving grace, and greater understanding and affection for the Spirit of God indwelling, leading, and empowering our lives.
In Wednesday night Bible talk and on 3 Guys radio, the theme of worldliness, and carnal living among those who profess Jesus came up. The Psalmist, “But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me.”[8] I do not want my stubborn heart to go down that failure to hear road! You do not either. A chronic state of being that largely reflects sinful ways, selfishness, no room for God, is a lost unregenerate heart. “So, I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.”[9] Beloved, we pray that God, please God have mercy, for the wayward, those stubborn hard-hearted folks we love.
I am certain there are stubborn ways, thoughts, habits, trying to hide in the crevices of my heart and mind that need softening. You probably are aware of one or two as well. We are not those who live in chronic sinful ways or delight in evil. No! However, I know God is continually calling me, and you too, to glorify him in all areas of this Christ-life—those recurring sins caught quickly and abated by the blood of the Lamb! We rely on and are continually strengthened by the precious Name of Jesus at every turn.[10] “Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.”[11]
