Friday Morning Prayer:)… March 23, 2017

March 23, 2017 - 8 minutes read
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?[1]

“I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”[2]

Beloved in Jesus,

We sing victory in Jesus, my Savior forever!  He sought me and bought me with his redeeming blood.  Moreover, he leadeth me, he leadeth me by his own hand he leadeth me.  He is the Potter I am the clay!  Therefore, “I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.  My soul will boast in the Lord; let the afflicted [humble] hear and rejoice.  Beloved, “Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.”[3]

African-American slaves likely created this “spiritual” (1899) hymn which prompts deep thought and heart-felt reflection about the crucifixion, our Lord’s suffering for my sins, his death, burial, and resurrection, our hope of glory!  Moreover, I think of our brothers, sisters of old who suffered, were humiliated, yet humbled before our Mighty God.  We benefit from “Spirituals” today because our gracious God, ever present watched over and empowered those in slavery, especially those who feared, revered, hence trembled, and whose hope rested in his unfailing love.

I need God every moment of every day!  You do too!  Where does my help come from?  Indeed!  The Maker of heaven and earth!  The Psalmist said, “Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.”[4]  Moreover, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man [woman] who takes refuge in him.”[5]  So often distractions, burdens, frustrations, stressors of life, weigh on me, likely you too.  However, I am thankful for the songs of old, Scripture, especially the living Word that encourages us, reminds us, of our ever present God who helps us in our time of need and allows us to enjoy him in meaningful relationship.

“Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing.”[6]   Like the spiritual song, we embrace a way of life that is in awe and reverent acknowledgement of our holy, holy, holy God!   Brother! Sister! May our gracious God help you always!  He is our help through times of trouble.  His love far outweighs our burden of recurring sin or the difficulty accepting, experiencing the love of God daily.  Through our Lord Jesus we are forgiven, restored, rejuvenated all the time!  Our indwelling God demonstrated his love through the cross, an ongoing sacrificial, deep, intimate, transforming love from the God of all comfort.    Help me, and you to embrace this truth more and more as the day approaches, my humble prayer before our most holy God.

This past Sunday, as the Spirit moved it was emphasized how we need each other!  To encourage and remind one another of our great salvation!  Moreover, to love, pray for, carry each other’s burdens as we surrender all to our sovereign God.  All else matters less!  Our purpose, our Sovereign’s call to us in Jesus, is to love God and enjoy him, to love others and fellowship with the joy of Jesus!  Grow in grace, live according to the Spirit, be radiant in Christ!  The cross!  God helps us work out our salvation with fear and trembling!  Like Asaph, we see the worldliness around us, selfish gain, no regard for God, heck, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”  Yes!  “But as for me, it is good to be near God.  I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds[!].”[7]

Let’s do this together!  Through prayer, fellowship, biblical guidance, and supernatural love!  May there be many times you “…feel like shouting ‘Glory, glory, glory!”

Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when the sun refused to shine?

Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

Were you there when he rose up from the dead?
Were you there when he rose up from the dead?
Sometimes I feel like shouting ‘Glory, glory, glory!’
Were you there when he rose up from the dead?
