Friday Morning Prayer:)… March 18, 2021
March 19, 2021 - 8 minutes readAs morning dawns and evenings fades
You inspire songs of praise
That rise from earth to touch Your heart
And glorify Your name
Your name, is a strong and mighty tower
Your name, is a shelter like no other
Your name, let the nations sing it louder
‘Cause nothing has the power to save
But Your name
Jesus, in Your name we pray
Come and fill our hearts today
Lord, give us strength to live for You
And glorify Your name[1]
The name of the LORD [Yahweh] is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.[2]

A strong tower for the righteous in Christ. How often do I run to the Lord? Is your life, my life, our lives in Christ a safe refuge all the time? In a salvation sense, yes. Every truly regenerate heart is safe in Christ. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”[3] Indeed! Our God is ever-present. He does inspire songs of praise to glorify his name. So often I stand amazed in the light of his holiness and my unholiness; God is faithful still. God, through Christ Jesus is our strong and mighty tower, a shelter like no other.
There is an existential reality that God is present in my life all the time, yet am I constantly mindful of this truth? You likely know those days; a brother said recently, “I wasn’t feeling the compassion for another, not feeling so close.” Although he knows God is ever-present, he wasn’t feeling it, or maybe not mindful of it, and admitted to not being responsive. My son admitted his slacking on his scripture reading and not sensing God in the same way, but he readily recognized his tendency to be distracted by other things. I admitted the busy-ness of life distracted me earlier this week and that necessary time usually given to pursuing the Lord was neglected. I definitely felt the strain of this life. A faithful brother encouraged me at Bible study; God is with you whatever you are doing. Yes. Thank you, Lord. Genuine mercy and grace expressed.
To ease the strain, reduce the anxiety, be strengthened, empowered to overcome worldly vices, redirect carnal pursuits, irritable reactions, compromising behaviors, distractions, and to overflow love, acts of kindness, manifest joy, and genuine compassion, etc. God calls us to fellowship with him, not only being safe in him existentially, but practically pursuing him in Spirit power, praying with fervency, desperation, and passion. The vulnerability and transparency of our brother revealing his lack of compassion and practical love toward another–very real! You and me have the same struggles. Therefore, I recognize my desperate need to run to, pursue, ask, seek, and knock in my mind’s eye all the time. God knows my weaknesses, yours too, and blesses us with greater and greater strength as we pursue him. Moreover, blessed are ye who, “…delight in the law of the Lord, and on his law… meditate day and night.” As a result of pursuing the depths of God through his Word in sweet, enjoyable fellowship or even through agonies inherent in this life, pressing in, casting all your cares on him, expressing the ache of needing to be embraced and comforted, you and me are strengthened. The inspired words of the Psalmist are realized; we are and becoming more and more deeply rooted, “… like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.”[4]
Be encouraged! I appreciate our brother/shepherd Mark emphasizing the blessings, enjoyment, and strengthening we experience as we actively pursue the Lord, actively hiding scripture on our hearts, regularly crying out in prayer, setting time aside to rejuvenate, and worship God in Spirit and truth. The writer of Hebrews does encourage us, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”[5] God has given us his inspired Word that we might know his greatness, holiness, and redeeming love, especially through the cross of Christ. Beloved, persevere in gospel truth and supernatural strength. Lean on one another, rest in Jesus as our God sustains us, the body of Christ. “Let us hold unswervingly the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.”[6] The God of all comfort is truly the shelter like no other!
