June 18, 2020 - 6 minutes read

Come thou Fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I’m fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise mine Ebenezer
Hither by thy help I’m come
And I hope by thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed his precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be
Let thy goodness like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for thy courts[1]

Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.[2]

Do I raise my Ebenezer daily?  Indeed, the celebration of Yahweh’s powerful, merciful gracious intervention.  In the midst of cultural chaos, rebellion, injustice, hate, anger, destruction, etc.  the regenerate heart raises “the stone of help,”[3] recognizing, believing, proclaiming, “Thus far has the Lord helped us.”[4]  Your call and mine too, is to continually seek God humbly, whole-heartedly, without flagrant recurring idolatrous, adulterous, rebellious, unrepentant sinful thoughts and behavior.  Samuel called the nation together for introspection, an examination on one’s heart with fasting and confession.  We, similar to the people of Israel, before the throne of grace and supernaturally moved by our holy, holy, holy God, mourn our depraved tendencies, repent from wayward ways, and cry out for the unregenerate; hence, we persistently, continually seek God’s merciful intervention, even with tears.

Oh, the necessity to encourage one another to genuinely live dependent working-out this Christ-life by God’s power.  Truly, ‘Hither by thy help I come’ you and me run to the Lord drawn by his grace with a blessed assured hope we will indeed arrive at our eternal home according to his sovereign plan.  Why?  Jesus sought you; our merciful God grabbed your wandering depraved heart and rescued you from danger!  Me too!  I get excited at this truth proclaimed, especially when embraced and lived-out.  Beloved, stand amazed in the presence of Jesus, the Nazarene![5]  His blood shed “interposed” the cross bridging the way, cleansing sin and allowing us to fellowship with our holy God, to enjoy him, and be continually empowered by his holy presence to always glorify him!  Truly amazing, wonderful, and marvelous!

I pray that you, as you read are encouraged and prompted by the Spirit of Jesus to cry out and contend, fight, struggle to know the depths of our God!  I do not know the depths, but I get glimpses and find myself awe-stricken now and again.  I fail to stay in strict training and sometimes do not run as I should to get the prize.[6]  I am prone to wander; I feel it, to leave that constant pursuit neglecting total reliance on God through Christ and his power through the Spirit.  You probably have the same struggle.  However, your regenerate heart and mine too, sing and pray with humble confidence!  “Here’s my heart Lord take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.”  Your Christian life and mind too, takes intense effort and the struggle is continuous, yet we grow stronger and the power to overcome is real, supernatural, and magnificent, amazing, and nothing, nothing, nothing, in this world compares!

Persevere through your struggles in his strength.

Above all else
I adore Your name
Above all else tune my heart
To sing Your praise

The highest praise
The loudest praise

To the name above every name

Prone to wander Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for thy courts above
