No tender voice like Thine can peace afford.
No tender voice like Thine can peace afford.
I need Thee, oh, I need Thee;
Every hour I need Thee;
Oh, bless me now, my Savior,
I come to Thee.
Every hour I need Thee;
Oh, bless me now, my Savior,
I come to Thee.

Beloved in Jesus,
Do you find yourself aching at times for God? Those days when thoughts, emotions are processing at a higher intensity, it stirs, even an irresistible longing for his divine direction, wisdom, comfort, presence. Yes, we cry out in unceasing prayer, pursuing and being pursued by our sovereign, most loving God. “Nearer, my God, to Thee…” “I need Thee, oh I need Thee; Every hour I need Thee….” The expression of hunger, thirst for intimacy with God; the regenerate heartfelt cry in worship. In Christ, you have felt the stir of God too, our indwelling, intimate God who comforts us day after day. No matter what circumstances I am called to work out, you too, we sing “…Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God to Thee!”[3]
“And one great evidence of his work in a human soul is feeling, and then expressing, that longing.”[4] Yes! Thank you, Lord, for the sense of your presence, the joy, the “I can’t help but overflow with excitement because of the supernatural work of Jesus! Moreover, those not so good feelings, yes, thank you, Lord, that I have to depend on you for strength and encouragement! Many times my negative emotions compel me to necessarily process with faithful brothers, and most importantly, together, and in secret prayer, learning to better lean on the Everlasting Arms of our gracious God.
So often, and rightly so, I cry out for God’s help to manage this life. Like the psalmist, we pray confidently, expecting, believing that our cries out loud, and sighing, those inmost thoughts, even our aching hearts are attended by our gracious God who calls us to earnestly pray. Absolutely! I read recently, “God loves to answer the prayer, ‘Show me your glory.’….”[5] In the midst of it all, God, show me your glory today anew, that I might rejoice in Jesus! He is the radiance of God’s glory! Moreover, for a struggling soul, a lost soul needing direction, even my aching soul, God, show your glory. All else matters less, when, humble at the feet of our glorious Jesus.
The glory of God! “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion, and sin….”[6] Beloved, my prayer is that you too are experiencing the glory of God through our indwelling Christ. You know those days when all you can pray is ‘help Lord, hear my prayer, I am overwhelmed, help in my distress.’ Most Holy God, show your glory to those struggling, empower, and may the joy of Jesus overflow. May we readily say, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”[7]
I need Thee every hour, in joy or pain;
Come quickly and abide, or life is vain.
Come quickly and abide, or life is vain.
I need Thee every hour; teach me Thy will;
And Thy rich promises in me fulfill.
And Thy rich promises in me fulfill.
I need Thee every hour, most Holy One;
Oh, make me Thine indeed, Thou blessed Son.
Oh, make me Thine indeed, Thou blessed Son.
