Friday Morning Prayer:)… February 8, 2017

February 9, 2017 - 7 minutes read

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the *worlds thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the *rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art![1]

Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.  I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.  Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.[2]

Beloved,

Through prayer and meditation we echo ‘O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider… Thy power throughout…’  Yes! ‘Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: How great thou art!’  The psalmist calls to praise! “Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.”[3]  Moreover, “I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.  My soul will boast in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice.[4]  The Spirt gives us the desire to sing praises, even repeatedly as ‘his praise will always be on my lips.’

How desperately I need our gracious God to empower me to worship without reservation, to be filled with the Spirit daily so I am able to love well, even speaking to others with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.  You know the tension between the flesh and the Spirit.  Love, holiness, mercy, patience, joy, etc., vs. worldliness, immoral attractions, anger, a critical spirit, subtle slights, envy, etc., all reveal the tension, that internal struggle that many times will manifest in the external.  The Scripture is clear that this tension will be ongoing this side of glory.  Therefore, we are constantly aware and remind ourselves to “…live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.”[5]

I read somewhere that “changed people do changed things.”[6]  The context was discussing the fruit of the Holy Spirit.  The emphasis was the role of the Holy Spirit growing fruit in the Christian life.  God initiates our regeneration and gives us his indwelling Spirit to empower us in increasing measure to manifest love, joy, peace, patience, etc., and helps us resist living according to the flesh, with inherent anger, sexual immorality, hatred, and the like.

Be ye encouraged!  O the necessity to encourage one another to constantly engage in the struggle.  You, in Jesus, meaning God has changed your heart, you are a new creation in Christ, your hunger and desire for God is forever present, regardless of how varied.  My prayer is that we be strengthened!  An insatiable hunger!  An intense desire!  Indeed, through the prayers of many, the fellowship of family in Jesus, brothers loving brothers, sisters loving sisters, relating, leaning, being transparent, singing and making music in our hearts to the Lord, especially as we rely on the indwelling Spirit, our deposit guaranteeing our eternal inheritance.  Rejoice always!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!

And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then *I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, “My God, how great thou art!”
