Friday Morning Prayer:)… February 4, 2021

February 5, 2021 - 7 minutes read

Ere you left your room this morning,
Did you think to pray?
In the name of Christ our Savior,
Did you sue for loving favor,
As a shield today?

Oh, how praying rests the weary!
Prayer will change the night to day;
So when life seems dark and dreary,
Don’t forget to pray.

When you met with great temptation,
Did you think to pray?
By His dying love and merit,
Did you claim the Holy Spirit
As your guide and stay?

When your heart was filled with anger,
Did you think to pray?
Did you plead for grace, my brother,
That you might forgive another
Who had crossed your way?[1]

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  Do not put out the Spirit’s fire;[2]

So often, necessarily so, like the Psalmist we pray, “Listen to my prayer, O God; do not ignore my plea; hear me and answer me.”[3]   As the Spirit leads your life, and mine too, we ‘sue [appeal] for loving favor, as a shield today’ and always.  Do I hear the Lord’s voice? Do I sense his presence?  Not always.  To genuinely enjoy God, fellowship with him, and be empowered and led by the Spirit, I know I must abide by his word, meditate on biblical precepts, scriptures—integrate into my mind, heart, soul, the word of God so I can hear and see clearly and overflow as the Spirit of Jesus indwells powerfully and leads my life.  Our constant pursuit is to heed God’s will! Yes, joyful always, praying continually and giving thanks in all circumstances through the real ever-present power of the Holy Spirit.

You are running a race surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.  What is the race?  The race is the Christian life.  The process is to glorify God with your new life in Christ.  To overflow love, joy, peace patience, kindness… and share this great salvation you have received with others that they too would be given mercy to join in the race to glory.  The great cloud of witnesses are people just like you and me.  They too ran the race with all its struggles, persecution, temptations, life difficulties, and overcame by the blood of the Lamb.

It is hard to throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles!  I trip, I fall, it hurts.  In his strength I overcome, I repent, and I fix my eyes on Jesus, pray for his help, resist the sinful ways in every form, and lean on fellow Christians to ensure I am able to run with perseverance.  Beloved, look to Jesus, consider him so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.  “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author, and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”[4]

Be encouraged that you are in the race!  This life is full of difficulty, discouragement, hardship.  If you are not in Christ, you are not in the race to glory.  However, as your faith is genuine, God has you in his sovereign hand.  Enduring with self-discipline this life and recognizing our gracious Father does take us through the fire of hardship for our good, so that we may share in his holiness.[5]  Therefore, supernatural peace, and joy, even as your life and mine perseveres, we stand strong under every heavy load, you continue to fight through every difficulty ultimately meant to work out for your good in Christ.  Help, Lord.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”[6]    Brother, sister, keep fighting and running the race to glory!

When sore trials came upon you,
Did you think to pray?
When your soul was bowed in sorrow,
Balm of Gilead did you borrow
At the gates of day?
