O, my soul, it longs for You
my flesh faints for You in this land
this dry land where there is no drink
I’ve looked upon You in this place
beholding your power and glory, Lord
Because Your love is better than life is
I will praise You as long as I’m alive
and in the face of precious Jesus
O my soul will be satisfied
O God, You’re my God I seek You

You have been my help
in the shadow of Your wings
I’ll sing for joy[1]
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”[2] “Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy.”[3] “Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise…”[4]

Does experiencing God’s presence and confidently pursuing him mean more than anything else in this life? I need a refuge and you do too. Our gracious God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. This life is full of varying degrees of trouble, stress, heartache through which our sovereign God teaches us that his presence, his power, his mercy, grace, and ever-present help we seek is more precious than anything, especially as God has your heart.
The Psalmist, “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you;”[5] I long for a Spirit-filled confidence every day all day, your regenerate heart does too! The hymn we sing, “Blessed assurance Jesus is mine…” Yes! In Christ, we approach the throne of grace with confidence knowing we are God’s possession and he has changed us, made you and me alive in Christ, no longer darkness, but light with God-given holy desires and longings to help us mature in knowing him with recurring eagerness to seek him. Beloved, as you endure this life in his strength, be ye encouraged, find yourself rejoicing always with diligence and sing “… O what a foretaste of glory divine Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.”[6]
I am very encouraged when I engage with others and recognize a truly regenerate heart with God-given desires expressed. You know that brother or sister you’ve had an opportunity to encourage and be encouraged by because of mutual faith in Christ. “Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.” God loves us and takes our calloused hearts, softens and causes my mouth and yours too to overflow with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control through his indwelling Spirit, to the glory of God. Amazing life-changing grace!
Because we have this supernatural confidence and eagerly pursue our gracious God, we increasingly pray and ask God to have mercy on those we love that they too would share this saving grace and be filled with the knowledge of God’s will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. Lean on the Everlasting Arms…[7] Prayerfully surrender all at the throne of grace as you persevere in his strength![8]
