Friday Morning Prayer:)… August 30, 2018
August 30, 2018 - 7 minutes readWhen we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.
Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.
“But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”[1]

It is a bit unnerving the realization that, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.”[2] I do recognize we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens and able to sympathize with my weaknesses. I am weak and fail daily in my desire to keep in step with the Spirit. Jesus knows our humanness. He left his place of glory and entered into our weakness. Therefore, he sympathizes meaningfully with us. Jesus was tempted in every way just as we are, yet did not succumb to sin. We have a God who loves us and relates to us because he became like us, except sin. In fact, he knows the full force of temptation in ways we do not. So often, I give in well before the temptation has fully spent itself. Jesus never yielded. Therefore, we are encouraged to recognize our Great High Priest and hold firmly to the faith we profess. In light of Jesus, even in the midst of our weaknesses and besetting sins, “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”[3]
In his humanity, Jesus discovered what it was to cry out to God in fear and distress. He learned to say, “Thy will be done” when the will of God was the way of the cross. In answer to his prayer, he was enabled to bear the cross, the ultimate trial, just as he will enable you and me to bear through our trials and temptations. Jesus offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death and was heard because of his reverent submission. In his humanity, he learned obedience through suffering to become the perfect source of eternal salvation for everyone who obeys him.[4]
At the throne of grace, I want to be heard because of reverent submission before our holy God. Help us, Lord, to heed the exhortation to “pay more careful attention” to what we have heard in the gospel so that we do not drift away. Beloved, let us hide in this great salvation! Moreover, I pray this living faith will compel us more and more to encourage others daily, as long as it is called “Today” we build each other up in our shared faith so that we will not become hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.[5]
Jesus cried out in prayer and learned obedience through suffering for our salvation. We obey because God has mercy on our depraved heart and opened our eyes to this great salvation. “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.”[6] A truly regenerate heart that loves Jesus strives toward an obedient life in Christ. Nothing is hidden from God. In the end, we must give an account of ourselves to him. Therefore, I must heed the exhortation and make every effort to enter his rest by obedience.[7] God orchestrates according to his power and grace. Therefore, let’s be encouraged to pray at the throne of grace daily and ask for the power of God to resist temptation, plead for mercy, humbly, with ever-increasing obedience, work out this great salvation.
But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.
Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
