Friday Morning Prayer:)… April 29, 2021

April 30, 2021 - 10 minutes read

My Jesus I love Thee, I know Thou art mine
For Thee all the follies of sin I resign
My gracious Redeemer, my Saviour art Thou
If ever I loved Thee my Jesus ’tis now

I love Thee because Thou has first loved me
And purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree
I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow
If ever I loved Thee my Jesus ’tis now

I’ll love Thee in life and I will love Thee in death
And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath
And say when the death dew lies cold on my brow
If ever I loved Thee my Jesus ’tis now[1]

“I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.  Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.”[2]

What does it look like to love the Lord?  What about the affections of the human heart?  The words of the old hymn, “What can wash away my sin—nothing but the blood of Jesus.  What can make me whole again—nothing but the blood of Jesus. Oh, precious is the flow that makes me white as snow—no other fount I know—nothing but the blood of Jesus.”[3]  “There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Immanuel’s veins—And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains—lose all their guilty stains—lose all their guilty stains.”[4]  Genuine love for God begins at the cross.  Amazing grace that cleanses the sin stained heart also brings forth supernatural love reflected in obedience and most satisfying, God glorifying, affections.

Psalm 120-134 are titled “A song of accents.”  These 15 Psalms are also referred to as, “…Songs of Degrees, Songs of Steps, songs for going up to worship or Pilgrim Songs.”[5]  Can you imagine the people of God, sojourners, singing? Yes, indeed! “I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me.” “I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from?”  “I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.”[6]  Just like those of old we too express our love to God through singing, especially songs of praise, adoration, thanksgiving, and gospel truth!  I share the old hymns, and sing along as I listen in traditional or contemporary form because I am genuinely moved to tears, joy, and heartfelt appreciation!  I pray you too, sojourner, are comforted, spurred toward love and good deeds, and prompted by the Spirit daily through glory to God hymns, psalms, and worship songs.

The gift of God is eternal glory, saved from the status of darkness and spiritual death to the gift of a new life!  You are light in Christ Jesus, our Lord and Savior.  Every truly regenerate heart has been reconciled to God.  “…if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.”[7]  Therefore, be encouraged that you have been given the ability, by grace through faith, to nurture and develop a love for God that is most enjoyable, glorifying to him, and ever-increasing.   “We love God because he first loved us.”[8]  Beloved, we rejoice in the love of God.  I know this is true.  I do love God.  In Jesus, you do too.  Our recurring prayer, help me Lord to love you more.

It seems to me that at the core of loving God is obedience.  I love to feel God’s love and feel genuine love for others.  As my affections are stirred tears will flow in gratitude, even as the Spirit of God gives that inner prompting and gives greater empathy, compassion, even conviction to repent from sin.  The joy of the Lord is our strength!  However, you know those days when the emotions are sullen, circumstances weigh heavily, or a testing of my faith is necessary to help me mature and rely on God more fervently.  Therefore, you, and me too, strive and thrive on what we know through the Word of God.  “We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands… if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him.”[9]  Moreover, Jesus said, “If you love me, you will obey what I command.”[10]  I very much enjoy the affections that accompany God’s Spirit indwelling, especially the love, joy, peace that is experienced many times over as I walk in obedience to the precepts, commands, principles given in the Bible.

Be ye encouraged that God turned his ear and had mercy unto salvation.  Like the Psalmist, we echo, ‘he hears my cry for mercy and I will call on him as long as I live.’  One commentator referencing Spurgeon wrote, “I love the Lord, because he hears.” He is always hearing. I am always speaking to him, and he is always hearing me, and therefore I love him.”  Our constant pursuit is to love the Lord our God with all we are: heart, mind, soul, and strength.  Humble, knowing sins hinder—the ongoing battle to mortify the flesh and live constantly in the Spirit.  Practically, help us Lord to be more aware, mindful of recurring thoughts and reactions.  Pray for increased sensitivity to hear and sense the inner prompting of the Spirit to fight the good fight of faith: nurture godly friendships in Christ, pray without ceasing—commune with God always.  Please God, as I examine myself, help me to insist in your strength, that my mouth speak words from a truly regenerate heart.

In mansions of glory and endless delight,
I’ll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright;
I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow,
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.
