Shackled by a heavy burden
‘Neath a load of guilt and shame
Then the hand of Jesus touched me
And now I am no longer the same

He touched me, Oh, He touched me
And Oh the joy that floods my soul
Something happened and now I know
He touched me and made me whole

Since I met this blessed Savior
And since he cleaned and made me whole
I never cease to praise Him
I’ll shout it while eternity rolls[1]

“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”[2]

Beloved,

God in his sovereign grace gives us psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to help us see his glory!  When my heart is aching, or I am burdened with life and circumstances, I run to the psalms and find grace through songs, and hymns of old.  Many times my sinful nature manifests, and my flesh does not want to repent!  With the psalmist, “Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice.  Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.”[3]  ‘It is no secret what God can do! What He’s done for others, He’ll do for you.  With arms wide open, He’ll pardon you.  It is no secret what God can do.’[4]

He touched me, Oh, He touched me! And Oh the joy that floods my soul!  Indeed!  Something happened and now I know, He touched me and made me whole!   He lives!  He lives! You ask me how I know he lives, he lives within my heart!  “In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade—kept in heaven for you…”[5]  Rejoice! We are the elect of God!  Residing in this world, yet sojourners longing for heaven!  Known by God from all eternity and assigned a divine purpose to fulfill through the power of the Holy Spirit, even redemption unto obedience to our Lord Jesus!

Sing joyfully! “…I’d rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today.  I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause; I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause; I’d rather have Jesus than worldwide fame; I’d rather be true to His holy name….”[6]  This life if full of trials and tribulations!  Fight the good fight of faith!  God is your source of strength!  His indwelling power to help you, and me too, to persevere!  In this truth, we greatly rejoice!

“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”[7]  Amazing!  Yes! “I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene, And wonder how he could love me, a sinner condemned, unclean.”[8]  I asked this week, “How is this true?” I love Jesus.  Truly, a supernatural sovereign act of God!  In his great mercy!  A truly regenerated heart loves Jesus.

The gospel message is that God loves you and me so much, that he sacrificed his Son for our sins.  And, as this truth was graciously appropriated to my heart of stone, I am now able to genuinely love Jesus with a humble heart.   I proclaim with confidence, and I pray you do too, I love Jesus and I believe!  I enjoy pursuing God!  And, as he graciously pursues me, I am filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy!

Brother/sister, have you had a glimpse of this truth?  Do you long for more of God’s glory manifest in your life?  Pray for me, and I for you: His power through us! Boldness with great humility revealed by an overflowing love only possible because of God indwelling.

Since I met this blessed Savior,
Since He cleansed and made me whole,
I will never cease to praise Him,
I’ll shout it while eternity rolls.
