Friday Morning Prayer:)… January 18, 2018

January 18, 2018 - 8 minutes read

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.[1]

“Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”[2]

“I need Thee ev-‘ry hour, Most gracious Lord; …Temp-ta-tions lose their pow’r When Thou art nigh.  I need Thee, O I need Thee; every hour I need Thee!  O bless me now, my Sav-ior, I come to Thee.”[3]  This I know with all my heart his wounds have paid my ransom.  Jesus sought me when a stranger rescued me from danger, bought me with his precious blood.  Here is my heart take it and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above.  In Christ alone who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe this gift of love and righteousness.  ‘Till on that cross as Jesus died the wrath of God was satisfied for every sin on him was laid.  Here in the death of Christ, I live!   Here in the power of Christ, I’ll stand![4]

We talk about the already and the not yet.  Our God indwells each person called unto salvation. He empowers us and compels us to a continual pursuit of intimate fellowship that is dynamic and exciting, holy and sacred.   The culmination of this supernatural truth is yet to come.  God assures us that he will dwell with his people in the midst of a new heaven and new earth.  Our pain and suffering will be no more.  “To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.  He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.”[5]  An encouraging promise for us, for you brother and sister in Christ!

In Christ, you belong exclusively to God.  Corporately, through the church, we the Christian community form the temple or sanctuary of the living God.  “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?”[6]  This truth is individualized too! “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?”[7]  God has promised to be our God and dwell with us and within us by his Spirit.  What a privilege, a joy!  In awe and reverence we embrace God who declares, “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”[8]

In pursuit of perfecting holiness, I need grace and wisdom to avoid compromise.  I do not want to grieve God indwelling or quench the Holy Spirit.  I need God’s power to overcome sin every day, so do you.  Therefore, honest before God in prayer.  His oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood; when all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay.  Moreover, I need you and you need me.  We need each other.   To love and encourage.  Speaking with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to one another that we might be strengthened through every storm in this life.

The process of purifying myself from everything that contaminates body and spirit.  The Psalmist, “Oh the blessedness(es) … how rewarding is the life of…”[9]  those who do not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.[10]  Paul clearly wrote, “Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.”[11] Moreover, our constant prayer, ‘increase my love for you, Lord, diminish my love for the world.’  “The cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does…”[12]  it all will pass away, but we will live forever in the glory of Christ.

Finally, in the pursuit of holiness, we find much delight in the Word of God.  As we meditate and study, hence living and breathing the Scriptures we become deeply rooted and produce necessary fruit demonstrating the glory of Jesus living in and through us.   Beloved, I pray unceasing that you are relying on God’s grace through faith alone for your salvation.  And, such a great salvation is manifest through an unquenchable desire to please God with your life as he sovereignly guides and directs your steps.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
